The Société d'Etudes en Archéologie Subaquatique (Society for Underwater Archaeological Research) - SEAS - is a French non-profit-making organisation set up in 1999 which brings together archaeologists, historians and anyone with an interest in maritime archaeology and history. These are its aims:
To promote
- study and research in the fields of underwater archaeology and maritime history - the preservation and caring use of our underwater cultural heritage
divers and students in techniques and methods for surveying and excavating in the underwater environment.
As part of this aim, SEAS has undertaken to make available in France a training programme originated by the Nautical Archaeology Society (NAS), a British non-government organisation which has developed this training course in the methods and techniques of nautical archaeology.
Clear, practical and instructive, the training programme consists of an Introductory Course and four Parts for training to different levels. It is officially recognized by UNESCO and has been selected by the International Committee for the Underwater Cultural Heritage (ICUCH) of the organisation's ICOMOS Council as a benchmark programme which it is keen to see set up in many countries.
